One product needed during makeup to keep up the perfect glow is a concealer. A concealer or color corrector is a type of cosmetic that is used to mask dark circles, age spots, large pores, and other small blemishes visible on the skin. It is similar to foundation, but thicker and used to hide different pigments by blending the imperfection into the surrounding skin tone. Sit back as we discuss an overview on concealer.
Although Foundation does a great job at evening out your skin tone, sometimes it’s not enough. If you have any skin issues such as pimples, dark spots, or unevenness that you’d like to conceal, concealers can be a helpful tool in your makeup routine. Concealers can be used alone or with a foundation. It comes in different forms from liquid to powder.
There’s more on an overview on concealer but first, let’s discuss types.

TYPES OF CONCEALER
LIQUID CONCEALER
Liquid concealer is the most popular because it works for most skin types. It provides medium coverage and can be used to cover hints of darkness under the eyes and lightly even out skin tone. They’re also great for covering freckles and light pigmentation.
Stick CONCEALERS
Concealer is used for very specific purposes because it is thicker than liquid and contains a lot of coverage. Stick concealer is quite pigmented and typically more nourishing. It’s best for dry skin types who are looking for a lot of coverage.
CREAM CONCEALER
A creamy formulation is best for those with dry skin, and thanks to the high coverage it offers, it can help to conceal pimples, blemishes, and under-eye circles. You need to apply it with a brush because it can look heavy due to the intense pigmentation.
PENCIL CONCEALER
Pencil concealers tend to deliver a semi-matte finish, making them perfect for contouring and covering up small blemishes.
- If you have oily skin with enlarged pores, don’t go for a creamy or stick concealer as these textures tend to clog and magnify the appearance of pores, plus they tend to add an oily shine.
- If you need to create a more even finish over minor skin discolorations, a light to medium coverage concealer will do the trick.
- For the under-eye area, be sure to select a shade of concealer that’s not more than one or two shades lighter than your natural skin tone to avoid an obvious white circle around the eye area.
- For your face, select a concealer that matches the color of your foundation. Avoid noticeably pink concealer shades, rose, peach, white, yellow, or copper as they will show through your foundation, creating an unnatural appearance.
A few tips to help with concealer;
1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT SHADE
Only the right shade of concealer can give you the result you desire. The concealer comes in different colors and choosing the right one is based on what you want to conceal. If you don’t get your shade right, everything’s just going to look wrong. Choose your concealer based on what works for your skin type and concerns. If you have dry skin, don’t go for a liquid concealer with a matte finish because the finish will emphasize dryness.
2. FOUNDATION BEFORE CONCEALER?
This is one question that keeps popping up, while some will say it’s better to apply foundation first before proceeding to apply your concealer, I would say whichever one you decide to apply first, do well to blend it in properly.
3. FACE PREPARATION
Concealer is the first step in your makeup application. Before applying concealer, make your face ready by cleaning with a mild face cleanser and applying moisturizer.
4. COVER UP UNDER-EYE CIRCLES
Just as the name “Conceal”, means to cover up, use a concealer brush or your fingertips to dab concealer under your eyes. Apply the concealer in the shape of an upside-down triangle. Draw a triangle from one end of your eye to the other, bringing the point down your cheek to your nose crease. Blend the concealer around the edges, so that there is not an obvious change in tone between your skin and the concealer.
5. COVER UP DARK SPOTS AND MORE
You can cover up dark spots, sun spots, or birthmarks using a concealer. Dab your concealer onto the top of each mark, and then blend softly outwards to your skin. Use a thin layer of concealer to avoid having a caked-on look.
Conclusion
Concealer can also be used to shape your lips, line your eyebrows, hide eyeliner mistakes, and much more. Having read an overview on concealer, what other tip would you like us to talk about?
